Trunk unpacks a lifetime of family dynamics, from sibling rivalry to addiction to caregiving through chronic disease to grief, and then packs a dynamite blast of a twist. The actors who play Liz and Emma share tender moments of nostalgia and then fling vitriol practically within the same breath. Their grappling with their respective grief over their mother’s death moved me to tears. The play’s ending was a series of stunning rollercoaster drops down to the last notes of the haunted music box. The night vision goggles scene and its lighting choice were a particularly delightful and immersive climax. Dense and thrilling theater!
