About the Project

Resilience is an autobiographical play that follows the experience of an African American woman returning to work after being on disability for her anxiety disorder. The play highlights the protagonist’s experience in multiple therapeutic settings as she seeks a therapist. The performance flows through one single actor, playing characters of various cultural backgrounds, genders and age.The play unpacks the correlation between race and anxiety, the strong black woman syndrome and the challenges people of color face in therapeutic settings. This work is embedded in dismantling the mental health stigma through the performing arts while reimagining a more inclusive society. Resilience reimagines strength on a journey of uncomfortable couches. The artist will host an interactive discussion around how the audience processes common shared themes in the play.
