The writing is engaging, thought provoking, full of comedy and also poignancy. To accompany the brilliance of the writing is a cast of stellar actors who flawlessly play the span of young children to young adults. The staging was inventive and the directing smart. The use of song and the actors physically looping to represent time passing was genius. This had me laughing loudly and uproariously one minute and then choking back tears the next. The play runs the gamut of emotions and really captures the experience of young, queer people in today’s society. I also love that not only do we get to see the struggles of the younger characters in the play, but the difficulties of motherhood and being a woman in our society is also addressed showing that our insecurities and sense of failure never really leave us they just adapt and age as we do.
What I didn't like
The only issue I had was it was sometimes hard to hear the actors either because the scene required intimacy and it became very quiet or because the energy was raised and I lost some diction in that case.
My overall impression
Girl Blood is the kind of show that no matter what you have been through in life you can relate. The experiences of the characters are so universal it creates a visceral and incredibly engaging piece of theatre. No matter who you are or what your background is you’ll see yourself in this show and what a powerful thing that is.
