Review by CAROL M. BECKER

What I liked

The concept of this show is truly unique and in a class all on its own. Not sense Monty Python has classical commentary looked and sounded so hip. I did not know what to expect next and that is always a good thing.

While the entire cast have moments of frolic and time in the spotlight, my favorites of the show are Hannah Arungwa (stepping in the role of St. Nick, et. al.), Marlena Hummel (Constantia), Nandi Sharma (Athanaisius/ Crispus), and Cameron Ley (Emperor Constantine). These four had my attention from beginning to end!

Also, I must give enormous applause to Hailey Springer for some colorful costumes. They were instrumental in showing what time period this show takes place.

What I didn't like

As the show contemplates growth opportunities and additional show venues, I offer the following:

1) When it comes to characters, less is more. Ten is already a large number, but when they start doubling up on roles, it starts to get a bit confusing. Which characters are essential to this story?

2) If the desire to burst into song (or rap) is there, why not go “all in” and make this a true musical? Dancing bishops for the win?

3) As someone who is not Christian, at times, I felt as though I was caught in Sunday School with massive amounts of information flying all around out of different characters. It can be a bit overwhelming with a lot to unpack.

My overall impression

Come All Ye Faithful (and even those not so faithful) to experience the historical zaniness that is Oh Constantine! Writer/Director Jan-David Soutar shares a droll 55-minute, 10-person play filled with clergy, royalty, fealty, and frenzy.

For those unfamiliar with the Emperor Constantine, be prepared for a fast-paced, comedy that explores the most significant portion of his reign. And expect to participate as Eusebius (yes, that one, the biographer) asks for help in convening the Council on Nicaea.

I promise laughter, applause, and a jolly good time!
