There were enough twists and turns in the plot to keep me interested, and Chas Laughlin, as actor, has some really exceptional moments. He definitely felt the most comfortable on stage and you could see the passion on full display.
What I didn't like
The pacing was totally off. Characters would deliver lines, then a beat, then a response – it became very sing-songy at times. Needed a pacing rehearsal to really come alive, and the ending was telegraphed a mile away and felt a bit forced (I also think that kind of ending can be lazy, but it does seem to be the go-to for first time playwrights). That said, this is Laughlin’s first show as writer/director, so I give him grace. For a first effort, it’s worth your Fringe dollars.
My overall impression
Tepid pacing and some questionable story directions make what could have been an outstanding debut for Laughlin feel more like a baby step in a direction that could be right OR wrong, depending on time. Interested to see what he does next, but this one (while compelling) needed a bit more care and attention paid.
