The performances in this two-hander were just a delight.
Tiffany-Smith’s performance gave us a grounded, layered heroine, something often missed in modern romances with some real grit at the center her light-hearted post-ingenue.
Vondexter Montegut II effortlessly skated between the wide-eyed geek-with-heart-of-gold and heartbroken victim of a love that is LITERALLY star-crossed. His intrinsic charm as a performer coupled with his perfect comic timing is a gift that keeps giving for the entire show.
J. Holtham’s romance is more than just a night at the theatre. It effortlessly navigates the tropes of the meet-cute, through the Inevitable heartbreak, to the, in this case unexpected resolution without one stumble into the traps of the genre. His crispy, witty dialogue is so breezy and fun, almost forget the deep themes and insights for which his play is a perfect delivery system.
See it. Before it goes elsewhere and the tickets cost too much. Seriously. Go see it.
What I didn't like
IT NEEDSMOREPEOPLE IN THEAUDIENCE!
The Broadwater is a lovely venue and the audience was certainly sufficient to provide the actors with the proper give and take you need for a FULL theatre experience. A capacity crowd would put everyone, players and audience over the moon.
My overall impression
This was just a delight. A truly modern romance with more underneath than a popcorn movie of the same genre. The script was crisp, tugged deftly at the heartstrings while, at the same time being laugh-out-loud funny and displaying an unexpected depth of thought.
It’s my second year seeing HOLLYWOODFRINGE productions and I am officially hooked.
