I loved how Joyce brings all her tools to this one woman show. We get a loot crate of her: stand up, comedy writing, improv, comedic timing, and even a little bit of her musical singing powers, presented by this unassuming Filipina powerhouse. I love how we got to know a little bit more about her in this show, but also because of her honesty and vunerability with the audience, we got to learn a little bit more about ourselves. I laughed throughout the show, I empathized for her with her struggles with not being understood by her family, and really related to her life journey shared through old pictures and running tally of her ‘Body Count’. I left this show thinking of my own number, only to kick myself to never have kept those names in a black book or excel spread sheet.
What I didn't like
This was a sold out show. Wish she has a bigger venue for the next show. Would recommend 5/5 and would watch again!
My overall impression
Joy was incredibly hillarious, vunerable, honest, and informative. She is the voice of a millenial generation for many of us Asian American kids growing up invisible or lost in White America or often misunderstood and overlooked by our own family. Her energy is magnetic, but also her writing takes us into a relateable journey that is not only navigating sex life from highschool through adulthood, but also the many complications of intimacy, insecurity, and personal baggage we have to process. Her informtive journey through addiction was not only relateable, but also eye opening, for addiction does not stop with just substances and chemicals, but also with our own relationships with our bodies and how we choose to connect with other human beings.
