I feel like I don’t know where to start. I want to say “all of it” and call it done, but that’s a cop-out. This could very easily turn into a massive bullet-pointed list that encapsulates every little detail I noticed, but I’ve got to pull it together.
The script is so sharp and poignant, clearly coming from a place of deep understanding of orthodox culture. Maya’s performance as the more grounded anchor of the two main characters is simply phenomenal — her joy is your joy, her despair is your despair, and always fascinating to watch even in the background. The exploration of sex and romance was something truly profound that I’m going to be digesting it for a long while yet. And I haven’t even talked about the gorgeous stage pictures everything was directed to create!

My overall impression
This jumped straight to the top of my favorites from this year’s festival. Not only is everyone on the artistic team clearly firing on all cylinders, but the production is constantly conjuring deep emotions that land with all the weight of a sledgehammer to the sternum . It’s fun, it’s romantic, it’s moving, it’s sexy, it’s horrifying, it’s joyous, it’s all the colors of the emotional rainbow and maybe a few more that we don’t have names for. Theatre at it’s best, I am delighted to report.
