The chemistry between this cast and crew was palpable. They seemed to have built a world of their own, much like the one the protagonists inhabit each month. The intimacy was well executed and tactfully done.
What I didn't like
The transition from one month to the next could have been slightly more consistent. Does the lighting always go down and the music play? Do the girls always leave or always stay? Are the swimsuits always the same or always a little different each time? Maybe there needs to be an additional cue of some kind to solidify the passing of this time.
My overall impression
Weissman beautifully depicts female intimacy in Mikvah Girls. As her protagonists explored their connectedness in menstrual cycle and mutual love of Bruce Springstein, the audience laughed, cried, and mourned in silence alongside the young women—so excruciatingly wise beyond their years and naive to a world beyond their own. Maya Knell and Sofia Joanna epitomize the strength of vulnerability in their portrayals of the two young women. Even the walk-ons were electrically funny.
