She opens the show like a conversation and we slip into the narrative very naturally. It doesn’t feel overly theatrical; it feels honest. Anyone that has had a conversation with BK will know that she really is being her honest self in this show. This is my favorite show I watched this week.
What I didn't like
It will get better with more performances, as she gets more comfortable and structured with the monologues. It seems like a looser script, as far as the actual words, but I never felt that she was lost or not sure what was coming next. The story is in her body and she knows it well and the loose script allows her to play and find more and more authenticity in the story, but workshopping and performing this show more will help her get comfortable with her verbiage and eloquence and flow. She is naturally charismatic so she could keep it the same and it will be just fine, but seeing as how this is her first show, I hope to see her on many many more stages.
My overall impression
Incredibly relatable story. Most people have experienced low self-esteem and a lot of us did resort to self-harm and ideations at some point and, even more disturbingly, a lot of us don’t get the help we need until we’re adults. It’s a beautiful story with serious themes but its framed with tons of humor and Brenda does a great job of lowering the audiences defenses from the very beginning so they really feel like they’re apart of the story.
