It deconstructed the form while commenting on today’s insane world, all the while making me laugh near-continuously. However, the jokes were not slight. Rather, they were layered, smart, and the performers chemistry was palpable. Pacing was stellar, it left me wanting to run around Hollywood like a raving lunatic telling everyone who would listen about the blast of a show.
What I didn't like
If I had one note, it would be that the first excerpt, from Agememnon 2.0, felt a little lengthy and was a hard veer into capital D Drama from the comedy of the frame/opening scenes. The actors were almost … TOO good? that it bumped me into wondering if they all secretly were trying to save the plays. Maybe it would benefit from a bit more melodramatic a read, especially from Spicer, to indicate his disdain for having to go through these weighty motions.
My overall impression
I figured it would be funny, but NOTHING could have prepared me for just how RAZORSHARP of a satire I was gonna get. It’s easy to satirize the insanity of today’s America, but it’s DIFFICULT to do so in such a deft, smart way. When it ended, I was ready to walk right back in and start another Tribunal. Bravo to all involved!
