The music, the singing, oh the singing, that sequined dress, Sunita is a diva.
What I didn't like
Make it a little more performative. Just a little more. There was a sofa on stage but it was never used. The space and lighting could have been used more intentionally and smartly.
My overall impression
This was a powerhouse performance. Not only because the vocal renditions were superlative but also because Sunita put so much of herself under the scanner. A very brave show that addresses parenting, a performer’s journey, the American beauty pageant industry, and the politics of representation. The stories weaved beautifully through the music. Sunita not breaking into the Broadway big league was, I dare say Broadway’s loss. Also a sordid reminder that so much of America is wasted by racism of its institutions. Sunita has had an extraordinary life and it was a delight to catch a glimpse of it through her music.
