Sammi’s portrayal of Irene was my favorite part of the show, truly bringing me to tears in her songs about how excited she is to love and learn about her new sister. The acting and directing was heightened and campy which really lent itself to help the audience jump into the world of the musical.
What I didn't like
The younger brother and Step-father characters, by the end of the show, felt like we didn’t see as much backstory or development from their characters.
My overall impression
What meets the eye as a fun, hip hop, fantastical musical is much more with deeper notes of a story about people wanting be accepting for who they are, no matter how many asterisks gets attached. As transgender woman myself, the storyline with the younger sister was particularly touching and left me wishing I had a sibling that – giving me a good reminder how much a story can impact someone else.
