What I liked

The audience participation was excellent. The use of props and physical pieces in the show was creative. The sound design and video accompaniment helped move the story along and provide background to some characters mentioned. Actual archive footage of Maria as a child was used, which added to the realism of the play. The raw eggs! The ambiguity of the ending. Are we eaten alive by our guilt or do we let guilt destroy us? Can we be saved?

My overall impression

The Iditarod by Maria Gnoza is a story that explores guilt, growing up, independence, grief, and acceptance told creatively through character interaction, storytelling, performance art, and audience participation. I thought this show had incredible things to say about how we process guilt as we grow up, and conversely how we can refuse to process guilt. It is a show that will stick with me for a long time.
