I liked the mommy character cutout. I liked the use of props and throwing them around and making them into things. I love the transformations that Rachel goes through. I love her sensitive depiction of each character, culminating in the most tender and real character of all. I felt like I could find so much meaning in this piece without meaning hitting me over the head or being explained to me so obviously or directly. I love Rachel’s silly, sexy, and serious depths in this piece. I love getting to know Rachel on stage.
What I didn't like
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this show months ago in a workshop I attended with Rachel and it has gotten so honed since then and also she had it perfect then and perfect now. What could be improved about this show is for it to have a wider audience and propel Rachel into the clown kingdom of heaven.
My overall impression
BABY deserves to win TOP OF FRINGE. Baby is extremely precise while being deliciously messy. Baby is a clown show, a therapist devolving into a mutated mirror for the audience, a distinct and disturbing baby’s “Waaaaaaa” from a beautiful artist! I trust Rachael on stage to cradle us and to ask to be cradled. The way she handled the incredibly difficult and vulnerable audience interaction was incredibly creative, professional and pushing.
