My overall impression

From the moment Miller enters the house, you’re not so much “watching a show” as you are sitting with a friend as she unpacks her pathos surrounding one of the most tragic, challenging, complicated, and fraught events in her life.

What follows is an incredible journey through the inexplicable trauma of saying goodbye to a loved one and all the ups, downs, laughs, tears, anger, grief, despair, and acceptance that comes with it. Perfectly executed artistic flourishes include surprise musical numbers and home videos that help to cement that “friends just talking” effect that’s happening here.

And what a friend to be sitting with. Miller is no stranger to the Fringe scene, and her award-winning charismatic work will be found here as well. But in this first solo performance, Miller’s also letting us take a full look behind the charisma curtain to see her at her most vulnerable—she’s both a scared girl who’s lost her mom and a formidable woman who’s cleaning up the mess(es) left behind. It’s a fearless performance (a silly word to use when you consider the subject matter. What Miller’s really doing is exorcising some demons while thinking out loud and we’re lucky enough to be there for it). Tour de force doesn’t begin to cover it.

The fully immersive experience is deftly executed by the incredible production staff (Winokur, McMillan, Shaw Fisher all putting in exemplary work) and boldly, courageously, expertly communicated by Ms Miller. She’s never been better (and she’s always fantastic). You will laugh. You most certainly will cry. You’ll want to go home and hug whoever you’ve got just a little bit tighter than usual. Go sit with this friend as soon as possible.
