What I liked

It hit me, during Phillip’s show, that I say I love the stories from my childhood, like Rainbow Fish, but I never question why. Phillip’s show reminded me of the power of digging deeper into what we think we know, which, in turn, only helps us grow. I also enjoyed him framing the environments as an assembly and giving us activities to play with!

What I didn't like

Phillip is the star of this piece. If Phillip expands this show, I would love to see a version where we dive deeper into Phillip’s backstory and why he selected the children’s books that he did to frame his piece. I enjoyed getting to call out red flags and I think leaning into audience involvement in the piece throughout is a fun and engaging touch.

My overall impression

Lessons from Children’s Books is a funny and poignant commentary on the stories we hold so dear from our childhood. It’s a strong concept that I can see serving as the foundation to a comedy special one day. Give me all the red flags (just to call out with a cute prop I promise)
