In an era dominated by reels and memes, where even the gravest matters become punchlines (Hello, WW3), returning to the theater after a few years felt like a breath of fresh air. And what a delightful reintroduction it was! Having sat through my fair share of plays about the Bush Era wars in my 20s, I walked in with a touch of cynicism. It was a reminder of the impact live theater can have, even in our meme-obsessed times....

An emotional and exquisitely crafted tale beautifully told by the star and the cast. It was a profoundly moving story that left an impression on everyone in the audience, about the resilience of the human spirit and a sense of empathy and admiration for those who have endured the unimaginable.
The star of the show’s physical acting was a standout element, using every part of her body to convey the veteran’s traumatic experiences. Her physical presence, along with a strong and musically talented supporting cast, truly brought the story to life.

Due to the technical (and budgetary) limitations of the Fringe, the voiceover for the VR therapy was staged live, but in some ways that made the effect more interesting, as the actor playing the VR voice also became the mother later in the piece, in a way that was reminiscent of the time-travel sequence in the Jodie Foster film "Contact".
I also appreciated that this production added dialogue ...

Not having any advanced knowledge of the play, I found UGLY LIES THE BONE to be a gripping and real study of a woman's post-war PTSD experience. Eye-opening, mature, and sobering - brace yourself. ...
