Galatea is an operatic/musical drama that brings a magnifying glass to modern gay male relationships and how internalized homophobia can put a wrench in them. It uses different genres and styles to convey the nuances of every character on stage. A man, having completely given up on the idea that he’s at all, capable of finding love, makes a deal with the devil. If he can get three men to say they love him fully and earnestly, the devil will take their souls and give our main character the ideal mate in return. Each proceeding scene is a snapshot on his relationship with a different person; we see each little nuance, each conflict, and each joy. We watch as his relationships grow and blossom into deeply beautiful things. Unfortunately, our seeker of love is so incapable of seeing the amazing things that he’s building. In the end, having sold the souls of everyone who showed compassion towards him to the devil, he receives the perfect ideal love that can meet his standards: a mannequin. They sit together, having nothing to say.
