I attended the 6/22 talkback with Jean from “My Mother Doesn’t Know I’m Kinky,” and my heart was so warmed by the spirit of Fringe collaboration as well as the honest dialogue the panel sparked. As a queer person living with BPD and in relationship with people involved in the BDSM/kink scene, Jackie’s story was really compelling, insightful, and meaningful to witness. Ava June was my favorite, meow meow!
What I didn't like
Performing your music live and unamplified, especially with physically intensive blocking, is truly a challenging task — as a vocal coach, I would love to see this show again with increased breath support and a staging intentionally designed for vocal success.
My overall impression
This autobiographical solo show features well-crafted characters, a clever DIY ropes set, thoughtfully made costumes, and a delightful sense of humor. HOLD ME DOWN is Fringe at its core — human beings telling their story with heart and gusto for an enthusiastic audience of community.
