I LOVED the concept. It was really exciting to be brought into a talk show format. I don’t think this show would consider itself “immersive theater”, but I truly felt like it was. I thought that was super clever.
It’s funny how taboo sex still is, but ultimately, we talk about everything in regards to sex BUT how important communication is. I really liked that the message of the show is that 1.) Talk to your partner about what they like, what they don’t like, and what makes them feel good and 2.) Unless men are brought into the conversation nothing will change.
What I didn't like
This is the second show I’ve seen at the Hudson mainstage where I felt it was hard to hear the actors. It might be the layout of the space…I would really encourage the actors to project.
Speaking of the layout of the space…there’s a giant fucking pole in the middle of the audience. I would assume that the production’s solve for this was to put the desk and the couch (this is a talk show) very separated from each other. To me, I felt like it took the intimacy of the conversation away from the main characters.
There was a moment when an audience member rushed the stage in protest…this happened so quickly that I had no idea what happened. I would encourage that actor to slow down and let the audience take in the action.
In fact, that would be my overall note: the actors were rushing over each other to deliver their lines and speaking so quickly that jokes got lost and their motivations were confusing. If they took their time a bit more I think the audience would REALLY get an opportunity to enjoy what’s going on.
My overall impression
Platinum Pussy is a very fun concept for a show. I hadn’t experienced the talk show format being made into a stage show, and I found the whole experience to be very immersive and clever.
The orgasm gap is real, and I quite liked Sarish’s vulnerability and the overall message: without bringing men into the conversation, and without shaming them, nothing will change.
