I liked the gimmick of the setting being a late-night talk show, which made for fun banter with the audience and audience participation. The actors were polished and did the job well. The costumes and wardrobe were spot on and I liked the lead actor and her confidence when discussing these things.
What I didn't like
This show is a great idea, but is not fully formed and could use a re-write. The writing felt unbalanced and almost male-bashing at times. There were things introduced that did nothing to drive story that I felt were unnecessary 1) Us finding out she was newly single at the beginning (brought up then never touched on again – so whats the point?) and 2) Her masturbation scene (it felt like this was thrown in just to be titillating and seemed ridiculous and completely unrealistic). The stakes weren’t very high, I didn’t know enough about the characters to care about them, and there was no sexual information/education that was shared that hasn’t been talked about in every Cosmo article for the past 20 years. Also, the fact that she asked Jimmy to be her co-writer on Platinum Penis at the end made zero sense. It is a great one-act, I would love to see them re-write it as a full length and make it more robust and balanced.
My overall impression
Platinum Pussy is a fun, sexy show that delves into themes that most people shy away from talking about. It is bold and honest, and fun to watch. They make great points about feminism (men are needed in feminism!) and have some very funny moments.
