The ensemble cast was wonderful. Each character was clearly defined which made it fun to watch when they came into conflict with each other. The assistant Derek was neurotic and hilarious as every assistant should be. Our warm up host was energetic, charismatic and also slightly desperate which led to funny moments of him trying to secure his next gig. Our producer Zara was clearly trying to claw her way to the top and the big boss Charlie who was already there, was so used to the industry that even going against your own values and ethics is just part of playing the game for a woman. Jimmy and Serena had great chemistry and I loved seeing the arc in their conversation. Jimmy was funny, cocky and at times obnoxious but it came from a place of being misinformed and uneducated on specific topics that I could understand. I loved that the play didn’t just hate on men, but simply tried to show that part of the problem is we were never taught properly, so we just don’t know. Serena was passionate, fiery, educated and witty. She lead the play with raw, authentic emotion that you could feel with every word. I truly felt like I was seeing a best selling author on stage excited to share with the world something that no one really talks about. Toward the end of the play she pulled me in even further, as she spoke about her personal experiences that made me even question myself. It really made me stop and think. I felt like I needed to have more conversations about these topics in my own relationship. To me the mark of a good play or production is that when you leave, you walk away with more questions than answers, it’s sparks scintillating conversation with fellow attendees about our own experiences. This play hit those notes perfectly on multiple levels. Plus, the girl that played Serena is super hot and I want to marry her.
What I didn't like
I just want to see more! I was so curious to see what happens with Jimmy and Serena moving forward.
My overall impression
I thought the play was original, unique, timely and very funny! It had a great blend of themes, perspective and comedy so it made it enjoyable to watch but also left you wanting to have a conversation about topics that for most of us were probably never discussed growing up.
