I like plays that trust the viewer will follow the artist. Space Exploration reveals itself slowly as we build our understanding of the world around the protagonist and the levels of metaphor she uses to build her story, despair, and solace.
What I didn't like
The play is deepened by prior knowledge of US exploitation in the Philippines. It still works if one doesn’t have this knowledge, but it helps.
My overall impression
Space Exploration is a journey inward as much as outward. It builds its metaphors slowly, carefully, and gradually reveals the psychic and emotional costs of colonialism in the space of one woman’s life. Gorgeous work.
