The explosive, punk rock atmosphere is both intimate and far-out. I love the way Maddie explores the audience, inviting people to understand and de-stigmatize their own butt trauma from the perspective of someone who just CANNOT stop downing rectangles. The set is fun and comes alive as Maddie gets their honch scrontched by a cushy, deeply expressive rectangle puppet. I loved playing with the blocks onstage — Maddie is gentle and inviting and the interaction hilarious. The soundscape is noisy and provocative, and Maddie’s wailing vocals and polychromatic storytelling style is as mesmerizing as it is delightful. This shit is wild.
What I didn't like
No notes! I just want to see what’s next!
My overall impression
Fiery! Electric! Silly! Fun! Rectangles shapes up to be everything I dreamed it would be—a twisty tour through the mind (and colon?) of brilliant, avant-garde darling, Maddie Mutations. It’s giving Bjorkian kindergarten teacher. If Yoko Ono and Marina Abramovic collab’d on a Dadaist pop album. Truly one-of-a-kind.
