I loved the surreal set design, which reminded me of a child’s funhouse bouncy room or a padded cell in a looney bin of the mind. Primary color blocks were thrown, eaten, stacked and spewed from every angle. Silly-but-scary puppets kept popping out of the corners to challenge Maddie to see herself and her world differently. Fun, funny, but provocative thought piece! I can’t wait to go back and see what I missed the first time around!
What I didn't like
I would have liked to have been able to read along with the monologue somehow, maybe in the program, or on a screen, because what I was able to absorb was so good, I wanted to catch all the nuances!
My overall impression
What a unique theatrical experience this was! From her clownish props, costuming and set design to her soul-baring lyrics and surreal, original melodies, this young woman’s inner struggles with people-pleasing and learning to rid herself of toxic blocks is cathartic!
