Everything, it was refreshing to see a play at this Fringe where I didn’t walk out questioning, “why did this need to be done.” We are currently in an attention economy and as artists it’s important to understand that if we’re gonna take up the space and time of the audience we better make that count. Young Jane made it count, no filler just hits.
What I didn't like
This play was short. For what the play was it was a perfect length as we watched a revolutionary experience their last moments of death while broadcasting their message to the world. That said I would love to see the current production be done in a more immersive space such as an abandoned warehouse or hotel. I would also really like to see this play expanded into an epic which I think can be done with the stylization of the piece in its current state and by exploring the lead up and assassination attempt or even the fallout of Young Janes passing and the fall of a leader.
My overall impression
This show is everything I wanna see in a play. The play is gritty and realistic with theatrical elements throughout. Young Jane serves as an avatar for the voice of the oppressed when it’s all, but stifled. They are the vox populi dying out as capitalism and oppression lives on in a true American tragedy.
