The show could have been just an hour-long riff on an offbeat family but it’s more substantial than that. There’s no cheap and easy laughs despite lots of “OMG did that actually happen” moments that have you LOLing.
The sparse staging keeps your attention focused on Isabella’s talent for storytelling. A couple visual aids and a single bit of audience participation are all that’s needed to illustrate the interpersonal dynamics. Along with Isabella, we discover that those dynamics led her to who she is here and now and where she’s headed. She’s at peace with that, and so is the audience.
What I didn't like
I’m seeing different names for the show like “Dad and The Nanny” and “So My Dad and The Nanny.” I think the original one “So My Dad F*ked The Nanny” is not only funnier but is more authentic to the spirit of the show. I would keep the original title even if some may be offended by it.
My overall impression
Isabella opens up about her family and their relationships with candor and self-deprecating humor, and without any judgment or resentment. She not only shares details that led to and resulted from the incident the show is titled after but also presents the people involved as genuinely flawed humans she still loves.
