Writer/director Jessica Silvetti keeps the script tight and the storytelling focused, no small feat for a solo show about a life this big. Virginia Novello pulls you in immediately and doesn't let go. What could have felt like a history lesson becomes something much more immersive, like getting lost in a good book you can't put down. The show was thoughtful and heartfelt, and explored complex questions about culture, past trauma and what family means. Both actors deliver sincere performances, you could feel the tension, and the story leaves plenty to think about afterward. Having had the pleasure of watching Jim (and his wonderfully talented producer-wife Lisa) carol in real life during holidays past, this felt like a fun and illuminating peek behind the curtain. What becomes clear is that carolling is so much more than singing a few holiday songs. The artistry and effort required to bring genuine joy to others is no small feat, and like any craft it comes with its own highs, lows, and hidden challenges that the outside world never sees. Clever, fun, and packed with laughs, this show took us on an interactive wilderness adventure with Larry, an ill-equipped aspiring YouTuber determined to find viral fame while hunting in the Alaskan wilderness. No matter how many things went hilariously wrong, Larry never lost his optimism. The show is full of visual gags, physical comedy, and unexpected audience participation, making us feel like we were part of it. Feel-good vibes were had by all at Disco Therapy! Liza had the entire audience in the palm of her hand, sharing stories of personal trauma, growth, and resilience while always finding her way back to hope, joy, and connection. Though tears stung my eyes, I found myself laughing til my cheeks hurt.
