A Void

nikki muller · June 12, 2017 certified reviewer
A cryogenically themed "A Doll's House" that uses a surreal setting to explore domestic malaise, depression and feminine identity while being, for the most part, absolutely hilarious. Quirky, at points silly, at points disturbing, at points profoundly moving-- a combination I found irresistible. Effing GENIUS. I laughed a lot, I cried a little, and it all took place in under an hour. Find your way over to Formosa and get in while you can: Do not miss this show!... full review

Crisp, precisely choreographed performances from a deeply talented cast delightfully infuse Warhol's weird-ass words with new life in the span of a very fast and mesmerizingly engaging half hour. Go to this show. ... full review

Narcissus & Echo

Essentially a mythical version of "Hair" that centers on water scarcity, Narcissus and Echo is performed with bold confidence by the entire ensemble-- any moments of story that aren't immediately clear to the audience are entirely made up for by the brisk, decisive performances that pull us along, even if we aren't entirely sure of what direction that might be. I really enjoyed the ride.... full review

WINNER BEST SOLO PERFORMANCE & ENCORE: UNDER THE JELLO MOLD

nikki muller · June 10, 2017 certified reviewer
This heartfelt solo show is 80% laugh out loud comedy, 20% heartwrenching truth. Jennie performs all characters with clarity and dexterity-- unlike less refined productions, here, it was never unclear when Jennie was playing herself, her mother, or a variety of other characters, and it was often possible to lose myself in the story, forgetting it was one woman telling it. It was often hilarious, with the personality of the characters and liveliness truly coming through, which made the more poigna... full review

The David Mayes Show

A hilarious meta show that you'll like even if you don't get the inside jokes or know what's meta about it! Go, feel confused, have fun, it's a good half hour of silliness.... full review

Quantum Entanglement

This play was an incredibly beautiful, generous, lyrical wonder, a poetic exploration of an intricate concept grounded in a very real family dynamic created by the three actors (and cat puppeteer!) Schiller's play transports us to another plane of existence with a sort of magical realism, shifting in time and space, yet stays grounded in the heart. Her writing is beautiful and raw, and the emotions hit hard through the show, yet it glows with a surging optimism regarding the beauty of the human s... full review

Human Hothouse: The Aftershow

nikki muller · June 06, 2017 certified reviewer
Sheer comic genius-- a perfect sendup of LA tropes expertly performed by a virtuosic cast. This is a darkly funny and refreshing show to liven up your fringe. Come see this totally unique show with its crisp, snappy banter and wonderful melange of low and high brow humor (okay, mostly low, but very clever!) If you're annoyed by the Los Angeles celebrity culture and you need some relief and a laugh, this show is for you.... full review

Buffy Kills Edward: A Musical Romp

nikki muller · June 06, 2017 certified reviewer
A super fun show for fanboys and girls and normal people, too! While it's definitely way more entertaining if you understand the references, this show is also silly enough with enough badass performers crushing their vocals that non-Buffy/Twilight folks can still have a good time. The show is high energy start to finish, immersing the audience in a carnivalesque atmosphere of fun. Every actor is perfectly cast (and cast in multiple roles, which services the comedy beautifully) and lampoons the so... full review

Nicaea

To put it briefly, Nicaea is 12 Angry Men: The Bible Edition-- you get to hear elegant arguments for and against certain interpretations of scripture passionately argued by actors who seem to deeply care about what they're saying. (This is actually a big deal, because too often when I see shows that get heady or have elevated speech, it seems like the actor is just a word machine that doesn't have a clue what they're speaking, but I felt totally convinced that everyone both knew and truly cared a... full review

The Rise and Fall of Dracula

nikki muller · June 04, 2017 certified reviewer
This was a really intriguing, fully immersive theatrical experience-- I felt totally transported by the ambiance-- candles, white sheets, and a mysterious cast ushered us into our experience and lined us up, and the entire first scene of the show took place ina narrow corridor. The piece integrates dance, movement and some REALLY intense stage combat, all happening inches away from the audience-- I honestly have no idea how they manage not to kick someone in the face, the precision of movement is... full review
