NILBOG! the Troll 2 musical

NILBOG! Where have you been all my life!? When do I get to bring 20 friends and experience you again!? This was, easily, the best show I had the privilege of seeing at this year's Fest. Am I biased because I love the movie so much? Maybe, but that's exactly what I loved about this show so much -- this is a show written and performed by individuals who clearly love this movie, and endeavor beat by beat by beat to bring it to life on stage, as opposed to changing it up. Every actor channels the... full review

FANTASTIC show! Beyond the Valley of the Dolls meets Almost Famous meets Faust, and in all the best ways. Killer 80's-inspired soundtrack met with fun characters, amazing voices, and show-stopping harmonies. All this, and a body count! Had a blast with this one, highly recommended!... full review

This was a blast! I got a little bit of a workout, too! Comedy is always at its best when funny and irreverent humor are matched with great chemistry between its performers, and the experience feels sort of like a hang between friends. A very funny show, with a Kafkaesque twist to explore contemporary themes of body-perfection.... full review

A beautiful and original approach to explore themes of mortality, regret, resentment, and acceptance, with a twist of inevitable self-admission and atonement. Very well acted, elegantly written while grounded in humanity. The kind of haunting piece that leaves one in a contemplative daze, alternately looking backwards and inwards.... full review

Pump Up The Volume: The Musical

This incredible musical is an absolute and total success, at every level. As a mega-fan of the original 1990 film, I went into this one intrigued, but admittedly cynical -- what I didn't expect is that the musical would not only serve to capture and deliver the vibe, themes, and punk rock spirit of the film, but actually improve upon it with making its lead characters a bit more vulnerable and relatable; fleshing-out many of the film's side characters into more fully-realized and complex individ... full review

COME. SEE. SAW.

This show is HILARIOUS! Who knew that what my life was missing was to spend an hour with Billy the puppet as he recounted his family lineage, marital issues, and various community-service activities, before generously dispensing life advice. As embodied by Alex Walker, Billy is a consistently engaging lead character that commands the stage and keeps the laughs coming. Original, fun, highly recommended! ... full review

Pulling off horror on stage, eliciting a palpable sense of terror, is a big feat to pull off. An engaging character you can invest in, paired with a commanding performance, serves greatly to ensure the ultimate effectiveness of such a production, and to that end Rachael Hip-Flores, and her character Charlotte Taylor, do the job masterfully. Taylor is a character you're happy to be tuned into, from her initial peppy demeanor to her increasing sense that something isn't right, all the way to her in... full review

How to Eat a Bear

MY SIDES!! This show was hilarious! Both Luke Balagia and Mack Stine were fantastic, but as the zanier and more physically kinetic character of the pair, Stine was a force of nature, making full use of his expressive eyes, mouth, and body with all the explosive verve of a Tex Avery cartoon character. You can't take your eyes off of him. I love productions like these that lean heavily into the absurd, with its lead characters creating a language from the very beginning that is too ridiculous for e... full review

ERABUS AND THE FALL OF SPARROWS

WOW. Thoroughly impressed by this production. It was no surprise to learn that the play was written by high school students, as their frustrations -- be it with identity, family dynamics, sexuality, anxiety, or simply having to move forward in an increasingly complex and challenging world -- were not only communicated soulfully and genuinely, but in an incredibly effective narrative structure that included jumps in time, fourth-wall breaking, and meta-commentary on the "high school stage producti... full review

Bottoms & Bones: A Heterosexual Horror

This show was fun! Rapid-fire double entendres give the audience fun hints as to what it's all leading up to, and they payoff is totally worth the journey. And what a body count along the way! An entertaining comedy with touches of horror and romance, delivered by a game cast that is clearly having a blast on stage.... full review
