This is probably the best show I saw at Fringe (so far) this year. Dance shows are always beautiful. Dancers are extraordinary. And no exception here. But most dance shows have nothing to say, or the message is so obtuse in the movement that all meaning is obscured by the dance itself. That is not the case here. This is a wild play. I thought I knew what the play was about after watching ten minutes, and the first act was exactly what I thought it’d be, then the fact that there was a second act was surprising as was the time and location jump. But the thesis was intact. Then the third act the play took a turn. It was no longer a play about compromises when living with others. Hoop is a simple idea. It’s part clown, part mentalism, and relies heavily on audience interactions. I’m still trying to figure out what the show was about, what hole was meant to be filled and if she’d gotten the audience interactions she wanted, how would it have been different? The audience participation parts did not go the way she wanted in the performance I saw and there didn’t seem to be a plan for how to continue the show with an audience that didn’t react the way she wanted.
