Testimonials

There are hundreds of theaters, galleries, and studios in Los Angeles. They are all disparate, not connected, and often expensive. Anyone can rent them, but an artist creating is on their own. It’s scary and often difficult. The Hollywood Fringe Festival doesn’t create opportunities by adding more space, but by adding inspiration. Here is a central event, with lots of others doing the same thing, a central location, and lots of support from staff and the community. Opportunity doesn’t just knock, he invites artists over.

“The Hollywood Fringe Festival is a force that has changed and unified the Los Angeles theatre community in a way no other organization has. Individual artists and small companies like Theatre Unleashed need the Fringe to continue to grow. The people of Los Angeles need the Fringe too. Many of them just don’t know it yet.”

It was two years ago when I registered my play “The Birthday Boys” for the first Hollywood Fringe Festival. At that time, I had no resources or connections within the Los Angeles theatre community, nor any materials to market myself as a writer/director. Using the momentum of the Fringe premiere, I was able to secure five additional runs over the past year and half, including one in New York and an international production in Sydney, Australia. Also, thanks to the Fringe, I’m now a resident artist with Theatre Unleashed, and they have kindly agreed to take on my new western “Round Rock” for the 2012 festival. It is a massive project, one I could not do alone, and it’s all happening because of a conversation I had with Greg Crafts after the first town hall. I’m so grateful for the opportunities and relationships that the Fringe has afforded me, and if you decide to come out this year, I know they will welcome you with open arms and free peanuts

Four Clowns inaugural production coincided with the inauguration of the Hollywood Fringe in June, 2010. The idea was buried in my head for a couple of years but it was the Hollywood Fringe that was the kick in the ass to do it, I knew it would be a great platform for that type of work. Due to the success of the first show, we decided to create a clown troupe. Our original show, Four Clowns has been performed almost 50 times around the country. We played in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Phoenix, Long Beach and a few more times at venues around Los Angeles. Our newest run is at South Coast Repertory in Orange Country, it’s our most prestigious venue to date. In addition to that our second show, Four Clowns: Romeo and Juliet premiered at the 2011 Hollywood Fringe and won the Top of the Fringe, Best World Premiere and Best in Physical Theater and Dance. We are in the midst of creating two more shows, Four Clowns: Lunatics and Actors by David Bridel and Four Clowns presents That Beautiful Laugh by Orlando Pabotoy and directed by Turner Munch. That Beautiful Laugh will be our submission to the 2012 Hollywood Fringe.
