Fringe & Education
by ben hill
For students K-12, educators, administrators.
The Hollywood Fringe Festival offers opportunities for students of all grade levels and age groups for both participating and performing.
How to Perform
Just like any other artist or company, students can Register a Project Idea with the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Your project idea can be anything you create – a performance of a play, a film screening, a concert, a magic show, a musical – anything. All you have to do is register with the Hollywood Fringe site and book a venue. The staff at the Hollywood Fringe can help put you in touch with participating venues to find the right fit for you and your project.
How to Participate:
- Student Fringe, a middle & high school student focused day featuring workshops, performances, student performances, Q&A sessions, tours, etc. Curriculum will cover a range of performance, writing, and dance. Student Fringe will be Friday June 8 from 10am – 6pm at Fringe Central (Open Fist Theatre, 6209 Santa Monica Blvd). This is a free event for students from Los Angeles to see, learn, and create art with other students and professional working performers and teachers. Interested groups should e-mail [email protected] for more information on taking part.
- You can become an intern. Eligibility for internship positions is currently limited to students enrolled in high school as well as recent graduates. Internship programs are focused during the month of June with some opportunities available in May. In addition to the hands-on learning experience that this internship provides, all interns are required to attend weekly Intern Seminars hosted by the senior staff of the Hollywood Fringe Festival for the purpose of learning the greater details of how to run one of the largest open arts festivals in California.
- You can come see shows. There are hundreds of different performances in the Hollywood Fringe Festival in every manner of art you can dream up. There are plenty of shows catered to families with family-appropriate content. The Hollywood Fringe Festival is one of the most affordable, most accessible, and most exciting ways to see new and different types of performance art. In 2011, for example, a theater company from the United Kingdom taught students at Bancroft Middle School How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse. Sound fun? It was.
