Tova Katz is a writer, composer, musician, and performer based in NYC. She obtained her BA in Art & Power: Art and Social Change, with a Minor in Theater, Dance, & Performance Studies at University of California Berkeley, where she wrote, directed, and produced her first full length musical Spare Change in 2009. She was thrilled to have the opportunity to premiere her original solo dark musical comedy See You at the Funeral! at The Club at La Mama in June 2016, directed and choreographed by the incomparable Tricia Brouk. Since co-founding her independent queer playwright/performer collective—A Beautiful Desperation—in 2014, Tova has performed her original solo plays at Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Jack, and The Duplex, including The Sisters Hysteria, Sanity and Other Myths, Needing It All: A Beautiful Desperation, and When We Said Yes, and performed her new play Canvas in When We Said No at Dixon Place this past December.
Tova had the opportunity to compose, arrange, and perform original and collaborative work at La Mama’s SQUIRTS—an annual inter-generational showcase of queer creators and performers—in 2014 & 2016, and is honored to be performing at SQUIRTS again January 2017. She composed, choreographed, co-directed, and performed a series of tap dances as percussion to live music in Jordan Martin’s &Wilder at La Mama’s SQUIRTS in January 2016 and continued to develop this work, performing her original tap dance percussion with Martin at Ars Nova Theater’s ANT Fest 2016 in June.
Tova was featured in April 2016 as a co-arranger and vocalist in Dane Terry’s Another Name in Nightlife at Joe’s Pub following her co-arrangement and performance in Terry’s Bird in the House at La Mama in April 2015. Tova has had an incredible five years performing as lyricist/composer/pianist/guitarist/lead vocalist of her band Glittered & Mauled across NYC, and is currently recording her first solo album. Tova performed Off Broadway in Max Resto’s Zombies: A Musical choreographed by Tricia Brouk at Playwrights Horizons in 2014. She has appeared in the television series SMASH on NBC and A Gifted Man on CBS. Imagination saves her life every day.
