Lorin Howard

Lorin Howard, an award winning playwright, is a member of The Actors Studio – Playwrights/Directors Unit. She has studied and/or taken workshops, private coaching and advanced acting and playwriting courses with notables, Jeff Corey, Darryl Hickman, Tom Schlesinger, Richard Krevolin and Cecilia Fannon of the Tony Award winning South Coast Repertory Company.

In 2010, her 1-act play, “Uncomfortable Sex”, was performed for Orange County Playwrights Alliance Discoveries Event at Stages Theatre, Fullerton. “Uncomfortable Sex” received the Audience and Judges’ Favorite awards at the Eat My Shorts Festival in Seattle, WA and was produced for the Open Circle Theatre Company. It was featured at Bumbershoot, Seattle’s Arts and Music Festival, Seattle Center. (Labor Day, 2010) “Uncomfortable Sex” was selected as a finalist and produced at the LABA Theatre, for the Variations Theatre Groups’ Harvest One Act Festival, in New York, where it won the Audience Favorite award. It was then produced in Michigan, as one of five festival winners for TLC Theatre Company’s Canton 1-Act Play Festival and was chosen for production in the New Voices Playwrights Short Play Festival, Spring Voices, which ran three consecutive weekends at the Empire Theatre in Santa Ana, California (April – May, 2011). Uncomfortable Sex opened “The Players Theatre Short Play & Musical Festival – SEX” at the Players Theatre, NYC on February 9, 2012. This play continues to please audiences and was produced in September – October, 2012 as part of the Manhattan Repertory Theatre festival line-up. It received top honors, winning first prize at the festival on October 5, 2012.

In September, 2011, “The Subtext of Texting”, was produced at the Mysterium Theatre, Santa Ana, by New Voices Playwrights Theatre. It was produced in September, 2011, by Ticket 2 Eternity Productions for their “Disjointed Love Shorts; Torn and Damaged” at the Theatre Lab, NYC and in October, 2011, “Subtext” revisited New York and Variations Theatre Group, for a run at The Hudson Guild Theatre in Chelsea. “The Subtext of Texting” was chosen for publication in “The Best American Short Plays of 2010-2011” (Applause TheatreBooks, 2012) It has since been produced at Modlin Center for the Arts, University of Richmond, Richmond, VA (September, 2014); Hastings College, Hastings, NE (February, 2014); Downers Grove North High School, Downers Grove, IL (October, 2013). In March, 2014, “The Subtext of Texting” received a special presentation with Lion’s Paw Theatre Company, as part of their “Plays on the Menu” Series, (St. Louis, MO).

In addition to ALAP and The Actors Studio; Playwright/Directors Unit, Lorin is a member of Los Angeles Playwrights Lab, New Voices Playwrights Theatre – Orange County and Orange County Playwrights Alliance.

Lorin’s full length play, “Two Can Play” was first seen as a staged reading on April 7, 2012 at The Stage Door Repertory Theatre, Santa Ana, CA. It was produced at The Ballard Underground in November-December, 2012 for the Outsiders Inn Theatre Company, Seattle, Washington. It recently received Honorable Mention (top 10) for The Panndora’s Box Festival of New Works, 2012.

“Norma and Dave Go To the Travelodge”, a 1-act play was produced as a staged reading by Orange County Playwrights Alliance for “Discoveries: The Real Me” on July 8, 2012 at the Newport Theatre Arts Center, Newport Beach, CA and was a semi-finalist in The Harvest Short Play Festival at The Chain Theatre, Long Island City, New York (Variations Theatre Group; November, 2012).

Lorin is thrilled that “Uncomfortable Sex” was chosen to be part of ALAP’s production, “Sex, Lies and Social Media” at the prestigious Hollywood Fringe Festival in June, 2014.
