Meet Birdy Fox Films We’re Dana Fares and Katie Ryan—a writing duo who founded Birdy Fox Films in 2017 to tell bold, unapologetically honest stories that make you laugh, cry, and squirm (sometimes all at once). Our work dives headfirst into the messy, beautiful chaos of relationships, with a sharp focus on women’s experiences.
Right now, we have four film and TV projects in development, ranging from dark comedies to psychological thrillers to heartfelt dramedies. No matter the genre, we bring a raw, intimate lens to our storytelling, examining the threads that connect us all.
Our series Half/Life hit some major milestones, including making the final round of the Sundance Episodic Lab, the top ten in Kyra Sedgwick’s Big Swing writing competition, and being selected for the Gotham Project Forum. During the pandemic, we shot Bathwater, a proof-of-concept that premiered at HollyShorts and earned us a personal nod from Sundance (so close, yet so proud). Our newest proof-of-concept, Irish Twins, is in post-production now.
We both draw inspiration from growing up around addiction, mental illness, and family dysfunction, and losing key female figures in our lives shaped our commitment to telling stories that honor the complexities of women. Dana, a Columbia College Chicago graduate with a theater background, is all about elevating the female narrative with biting honesty. Katie, who studied drawing and painting at The Ohio State University, taps into her roots in the art world and her dad’s social work to bring a unique perspective to everything we create.
Together, we’re here to challenge the status quo, empower women to redefine their worth, and spark conversations that matter—all through the magic of storytelling.
