Don Robertson, writer, producer and creator of Harmony’s Edge in Concert, proves that reinvention has no expiration date. After retiring from a 44-year career as a Sociology professor, he began writing music in earnest in his seventies — and hasn’t slowed down since, composing hundreds of songs that blend storytelling, social insight, and the spirit of classic folk rock.
A true family collaboration, Don worked alongside his wife, Shirley, and son, Damon, to recordedthe indie rock album One Life in 2016. His first musical, Family Reunion, was set to premiere at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music in 2020 before the pandemic halted the production. Undeterred, he returned with Harmony’s Edge in Concert, his second original musical, again created with his family.
Now 85, Don draws deeply from his firsthand experiences with the countercultural movement and the vibrant music scene of the late 1960s to craft a rock musical steeped in authenticity. His musical journey began in 1969 at Long Beach State University, where he formed an experimental band called “The Lizard” for a sociology class — a group that described its sound as “primitive lizard rock.” The band may have gone underground, but decades later the music has resurfaced, louder, wiser, and ready for a new generation of audiences.
