Sammy Carrera
Boyle Heights born- Sammy Carrera, grew up in a neighborhood plagued by substance abuse, and community violence. Sammy quickly succumbed to barrio life and would end up becoming a perpetrator of these same issues. At 15, he becomes acquainted with the power of WORD. He learns of his gift to write, and poetry is what ultimately saves him. He has since volunteered extensively in the community by organizing with at-risk youth, hosted poetry events, and has been apart of social justice movements. Now he is dedicated to breaking the cycles he once participated in, to bring forth positive change.
