While the ensemble of actors were dedicated to telling this important story, it really needed to be trimmed into a tight one hour play.... full review

The Portable Dorothy Parker

While I knew about Dorothy Parker prior to seeing this solo performance, I learned more about her during this play than I ever knew before. Deeply researched and authentically performed, each tidbit shared opened up the world to me about this famed critic, write, and famous Round Table at the Algonquin Hotel attendee in the glorious days of early celebrity culture in New York.... full review

Grown Up Orphan Annie

An intriguing, thoughtful and comical look at what the childhood of Little Orphan Annie was like growing up with Daddy Warbucks on the occasion of his funeral. Under the comedy, there was both sarcasm and acceptance of the past while looking forward to moving on.... full review

Jolly Playtime

I have always been a fan of improv, and Jace and Molly are experts at it, portraying two young kids who are dropped off at daycare and are looking to have some fun with everyone else there (the audience). Especially entertaining was the inclusion of audience members pulled up onstage to participate and everyone’s willingness to do so. (I became known as the Dancing Russian Spy and will proudly wear that badge throughout Fringe!) Every show is guaranteed to be different given what suggestions are ... full review

Rhythm Delivered

Astounding performances by the cast of 6 who each dance and drum up a storm of excitement while using ordinary items to great effect. Ever danced on bubble wrap? Drummed on a Home Depot bucket? Be prepared to be surprised at what gets pulled out of boxes and then becomes part of the show. I especially enjoyed the electronic creation of music made up of noises from the cast and words from the audience, then choregraphed into a great tap number! Great fun for audiences of all ages!... full review

Every Day She Rose

This play about two roommates from very different backgrounds provides insight into both the LGBQT and Black perspectives on our society and how both deal with fitting in. Very insightful character development as we learn about their personal histories that have influenced how they deal with each other. ... full review

YONIVERSE (formerly: YONI KI KAHANIYA)

This talented ensemble shared stories of their personal experiences growing up as South Asian American women with movement well directed by Marianne Davis. With each being raised in different parts of the world, be it in America or elsewhere, as their stories were told you really got a sense of their identities as well as how all women should look at their bodies without shame. I was really impressed at their level of interaction while using beautiful scarves as props, especially since one of th... full review

Befok (or the desperate attempt to impress Iñárritu)

Asta Leigh was obviously enthusiastic about her play, but she started out screaming and carrying on at level 10 and kept it that way for the entire time she was onstage. It's very difficult to stay at that level for so long, and when there finally was a moment where she broke down emotionally, its impact was lessened due to all the screaming that had been going on for almost an hour. Learn to adjust your levels and start at a less hectic pace and volume in order to grow your audience's interest ... full review

Teaching a Robot to Love (the Musical)

A very modern take on finding love, friendship, and acceptance of others. Dedicated actors with great voices, rainbow-hued costumes, with clever lyrics and choreography in such a small staging area. Kudos to director Ashley Ward for pulling it all together and to the cast for their great enthusiasm and energy.... full review

What Am I, Chopped Suey?

shari barrett · June 18, 2022 certified reviewer
Meg Lin gives a brutally honest and heartfelt performance, offering us a look inside the cold upbringing she endured from her Chinese parents in Los Angeles. And any of us raised by parents who grew up in another country or culture will identify with her struggle to become a modern American amid the challenges of trying to please parents who cannot possibly understand the new world in which you live.... full review
