The performers had great energy and each in their turn was a poet worth spending time with. Bill Ratner’s work stood out as heartfelt and moving in surprising ways.
What I didn't like
The volunteer participation segment at the end could have used the kind of clever concepts and real humor found in the poetry. Instead, it felt like filler for a bachelorette party. Also, Nicelle’s use of that cancer victim’s found instructional materials was questionable. There are unintentionally funny charm school documents from the ‘60s that don’t come with tragedy attached. Maybe explore those?
My overall impression
We enjoyed this experimental format, a collage play in verse, as a great way to experience poetry as an embodied art. Appreciated that the poems were published in the program so the words could be savored before, during and after. The poetry was funny, sexy, smart, engaging, thoughtful and moving, as were the performances.
