The Hedda I hear in my head is this delightfully droll creature playing to out-of-town conventioneers who aren’t getting a thing she’s saying. This was certainly that.
What I didn't like
It’s Fringe. Having the set come pre-boxed was simply expedient. Having Hedda run around in a black teddy was…something one doesn’t see that often. Having Berta remain onstage throughout with very few lines was a choice I may not have understood.
My overall impression
I’m always glad when productions acknowledge the humor in Hedda Gabler. Madelynn Fattibene tees it up in her opening scene as Aunt Julia and the cast continues to drive down the middle of the fairway for the rest of this well-paced production. (Also, I can’t believe I went for a golf metaphor, it neither applies to this show nor have I ever liked the game. But I digress.)
