Bradley Bobbs, the actor portraying Poe, really does manage to convey his deep, brooding despair. From his writings, it is clear that Edgar Allan Poe suffered from what now might be called clinical depression. And Bobbs, in his performance, seems to truly inhabit the dark, obsessive nature of Poe like no other. This is perhaps surprising, because in his day job, Bobbs is actually a PhD physicist, working in the field of LASER research. And to see him figuratively shed his white lab coat and don the dark threads of this tortured 19th Century literary genius, is to witness a remarkable transformation.
What I didn't like
Bobbs does not hold back in conveying the full emotion of Poe’s obsessive despair and that is a good thing. But I felt there were moments in the show, one or two perhaps, when it seemed like those emotional releases were just a bit too over-the-top. They seemed a little forced. He might perhaps consider dialing back those reactions just a bit.
My overall impression
If you enjoy the dark poetry and tombful stories of Edgar Allan Poe, you will never hear it better performed than in this dramatic portrayal by Bradley Bobbs.
