What I liked

Drew Petriello, a seasoned Fringe Veteran known for plays like How to Be Lazy and Not Feel Guilty, Sunbathe in Darkness, and Anna St. Hesia Dreams, delivers an excellent performance in Heart of Golden Tar. With his portrayal of Randy, Petriello skillfully portrays vulnerability, showcasing his great range of acting talent.

Guided by director Miles Berman, another Fringe Veteran, Heart of Golden Tar achieves a heightened emotional impact. The smart collaboration between Petriello and Berman results in a production that submerges the audience in a fever dream of heartbreak, intensity, and magical realism.

What I didn't like

While the play’s abstract nature may not be universally appealing, those who appreciate thought-provoking and creatively daring shows reminiscent of Black Mirror will find Heart of Golden Tar compelling and introspective.

My overall impression

A captivating 45-minute solo play by Escaped Recluse. It follows Randy, who grapples with a tormenting talking heart while searching for his missing wife. Drew Petriello delivers an excellent performance, portraying vulnerability and showcasing his acting talent. Guided by director Miles Berman, the play immerses the audience in a fever dream of heartbreak and magical realism, offering a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience.
