What I liked

I’m not including any spoilers because you have to see this play yourself. The power of the story and the divine performance by Hailey McAfee left me speechless afterwards. Hailey is both technically masterful and emotionally raw – it’s a gut-punch of a performance. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. It’s theatre at its best.

My overall impression

Do not miss this show. Hailey McAfee gives a knockout performance and Rosie Glen Lambert’s expert direction keeps the story clear, raw, moving and captivating. Playwright Gary Owen has crafted a play that is in turns funny, sexy, devastating, raunchy and deeply moving – through the very specific exploration of Effie’s life and an inflection point therein he illuminates broader social issues – not in a preachy way but in a way that sneaks up on you and will have you thinking about these people, this story, your own point of view for a long time to come. It’s a brilliant play and the entire team – including Brandon Blum (lighting design) and Padra Crisafulli (sound design) serve the writer masterfully.
