A smart story, a complicated and ultimately relatable character, a very simple set and production that gives the brilliant acting center stage. This play, principally the acting, had me laughing out loud then close to tears in a kind of gripping emotional merry go round. Against my will I became invested in this character.
What I didn't like
Literally the only thing is that the blazer she wears towards the end of the show didn’t fit the character. I found myself thinking she should be in white, and given the content something a bit more feminine (then the blazer could go over that potentially). I think the wardrobe there could be thought through just a bit more. Very minor!
My overall impression
This play hits with full force. In this solo act, the protagonist at first is an easy read. As the narrative builds and we learn more about her life, this character transcends that simple understanding. No longer someone to pity or revile, but someone with character and fortitude. The audience must reckon with their own biases instead. Well acted and directed, this was a play that you’ll want to chew over for several days.
