Such a creative use of black box format. I especially loved the lighting switches when flipping between characters. The songs Mycelium and Staring at the Ocean were top tier musical comedy. It was tight and moved. I liked all of the characters.
What I didn't like
I thought the Scorpio reveal (and song) toward the end could have had more story and arc and featured more meat on the verses rather than relying so heavily on the chorus.
Separately, I was selfishly dying for a final medley at the end, but I realize as a non-musical person that I have absolutely o idea how that is written and that this is most likely very hard to craft.
Lastly, some of Emma’s spoken lines felt rushed at times (possibly due to time constraints) and made certain jokes and ideas land less powerfully than might be possible if the pacing breathed a smidge more.
My overall impression
The Fault in My Stars is so creative, funny, and entertaining! I am not always a huge musical comedy fan, but this show is LAUGHOUTLOUDFUNNY! A perfect mix of storytelling, earworm songwriting, social/millenial satire and self-deprecating humor. EMMA IS A TALENT!
