Laser has an extraordinary gift as a storyteller and songwriter to deftly shift between raw and relatable drama and laugh-out-loud comedy at the drop of a hat — A Shark Ate My Penis is no exception. I especially appreciated the wry and whimsical production design by Chloe Badner, as well as the seamless and effective employment of these props and projections to support the action onstage.

My overall impression
A Shark Ate My Penis is a heartfelt, hilarious new solo musical that well earns the title of 2023 “Pick of the Fringe”. The task at hand? Unpack aspects of the trans experience in both historical and modern contexts. The method? A magical queer time travel machine, of course (watch out for pesky time travel ghosts). Our guide? Laser, a charismatic and witty trans man with a penchant for comic mischief and an impactful and personal story to tell. I left the performance feeling educated, empowered, and more queer than ever before!
