What I liked

Dan does a great job finding the funny in complicated situations. The show is poignant, irreverent, and very, very thought provoking. He validated aspects of my world view and taught me some new things, too. It says a lot that I, who had zero religious instruction as a kid, enjoyed the show as much as my partner, who grew up in a super strict Mennonite community (think Amish but with cars). He could relate to Dan on an entirely different level, but we both had the same amount of fun.

The show is very well paced, it never drags and there’s an organic flow from laughter to tears, then back to laughter. The simple set and basic props add levels and dimension. The lighting is very effective in distinguishing internal points of view, adding to the sense that we’re observing multiple characters, not just one dude talking at us. The writing is phenomenal. Complex issues are examined through a masterful blend of humor, pathos and insight. One of the biggest compliments I can give is that it’s highly quotable. It’s peppered with enough references to be fun (he really DID look like Mikey from Recess!) but not so many that they lose their charm. I’d recommend this show to everyone I know.

What I didn't like

Nothing, really. Dan makes great use of the space without invading the audience and the sound levels were just right for a small theater.

My overall impression

What a fantastic show! Articulate, evocative, and so freaking funny. My upbringing couldn’t be more different from Dan’s, yet the whole piece was completely relatable. I’d see it again and highly recommend it to anyone.
