I loved the way Chris transformed a serious literary work into a highly entertaining, hysterical show full of humor, satire and emotion. Chris is an incredible singer, rapper and dancer and his rapport with the audience kept my attention from start to finish and left me wanting more. The standing ovation tells me I wasn’t then only one to feel that way!
What I didn't like
I appreciate most fringe shows being short and sweet (under an hour in most cases). In the case of this show, I could have sat for double the 50 minute show and would probably still have been left wanting more. Also, I missed a few lines of dialogue or song here or there because the audience was laughing so loud and clapping so much.
My overall impression
Chris Chianesi’s one man musical was unbelievably entertaining and energetic and is true to the book Spare….although you don’t have to read the book to thoroughly enjoy Chris’s take on this extremely dysfunctional royal family! The show kept me laughing so much that my face hurt, and the original music was was so memorable, it left me humming the tunes as I left the theatre. I definitely see the similarities to the Broadway musical Hamilton and would not doubt that this musical has the potential to follow a similar trajectory as a highly successful “contemporary” historical take on the royal family. I look forward to seeing it and (Chris) on Broadway!
